Kiel - Brest: activities
Innumerable
encounters and joint projects between associations, schools, higher education
and other institutions testify to the breadth of the foundations on which the
town twinning partnership is built. The departments for foreign affairs of the
respective city councils in Brest and Kiel also assisted and fostered the close
contact and the visits between choirs and theatres, mutual participation in
exhibitions, festivals, markets, fairs and conferences, study visits and the
exchange of work placement trainees.
For many years, the German-French Friendship Club, the German honorary consulate
in Brest, and also the German-French Society and the Centre Culturel Français
in Kiel have been doing important work in establishing new links and maintaining
existing ones. Many
contacts are established via the Chambers of Commerce and via
universities and colleges, or as the result of initiatives by schools or by
private individuals and organisations.
Every year, Kiel has welcomed official delegations from its French twin city
as guests at the Kieler Woche and at the International City Forum in Kiel, and
in the same way, visitors from the Kiel City Hall meet with a friendly reception
in Brest on special occasions. In the year 2004, Brest and Kiel offered special
events to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their twinning partnership - for
example, the Hansekogge mediaeval cog-ship sailing from Kiel to Brest with a
German-French crew and in September 2004 the BRESTIVAL in Kiel.
