Kiel - Kaliningrad: the twin-city partnership

The partnership agreement between the cities of Kaliningrad (formerly Königsberg) and Kiel was signed on 18 June 1992. Before this, there had already been good relations between the two cities, which were extensively promoted by the Land Schleswig-Holstein.

Since the agreement was signed, delegations have regularly visited the twin cities, for example, for discussions about commercial and social collaboration, for discussions between experts in a very wide variety of spheres, for seminars and festival events, or – as in 1996 – to the instalment of the first democratically-elected Lord Mayor of Kaliningrad.

In almost every field imaginable, many authorities and institutions, organisations of every kind, companies and corporations, cultural and social establishments, associations and clubs have been actively involved in shaping the twin-city partnership. In 2002, Kaliningrad and Kiel could look back on ten years of very active city twinning.
