International co-operation
Opportunities
for co-operation arise particularly as a result of international contacts and
joint research partnerships organised by the Kiel colleges and universities.
Delegations from towns and cities with which Kiel is twinned or has particular
friendships use the Kieler Woche International City Forum as a platform for
bilateral or multilateral contacts and agreements. Many societies with international
links and other organisations establish and maintain contacts with countries
right across the globe. The city supports such activities as far as possible.
It would be hard to find a city with more sailing expertise than Kiel. It is
no wonder then that the cities organising Olympic sailing events regularly come
for advice to the Olympic city of 1936 and 1972. This was the case, for example,
for Sydney (2000) and for Tallinn (1980). In the case of Tallinn this first
contact paved the way to a full-scale city twinning.
The Chinese city of
Quingdao is due to host the events in 2008, and has concluded a co-operation
agreement with Kiel, which also includes commercial contacts..
