Kiel’s Agenda 21

The future programme for the international community of states, the guidelines for the 21st century agreed in the Rio Conference as Agenda 21, are something that Kiel wants to turn into living local government policy. The Kiel City Council passed a resolution to this effect in 1994.

Similarly, in 1994 Kiel also signed the "Aalborg Charter", a declaration by the participants in the European Conference on sustainable cities and towns.

Since then, in its international partnership work, Kiel has also been working towards achieving these goals. For example, in the year 2000, the Land Capital organised an environmental seminar to share energy know-how with its four Eastern European twin cities, Gdynia, Kaliningrad, Sovetsk and Tallinn.
