Kiel as an international partner
Breaking down barriers – With its twin-city partnerships and inter-city friendships
Kiel has contributed to this aim for decades. The city has received several
awards for its successful work in developing partnerships.
Today and for the future, international municipal networks are very important.
Among other things, Kiel is a member of the Union of the Baltic Cities (UBC),
in which towns and cities have combined to form an "Association of Baltic
Sea Towns and Cities".
Kiel’s international orientation is particularly reflected in the Kieler Woche
which offers a multinational forum. The Land Capital plays host to the world.
The relaxed atmosphere of a sporting event has always allowed dialogue to flourish
between politicians, artists and academics from countries which, to all intents
and purposes, had no official relationship with each other. Kiel’s "municipal
foreign policy" was a good many times several steps ahead of official "big-league
policy".
