Kiel -
Stralsund: the twin-city partnership
Before
the partnership agreement between Stralsund and Kiel came into force on 20 October
1987, the Land Capital Kiel had for two years been expressing an interest in
establishing a partnership with a city in the former GDR. Kiel was supported
in this by the Land Schleswig-Holstein. A decision from East Berlin and from
Bonn finally brought the two cities of Kiel and Stralsund together.
On the basis of this basic agreement between the two German cities, the purpose
of the twin-city partnership between Stralsund and Kiel was to foster good-neighbourly
relations and to facilitate good contacts between the people and organisations
of the twin cities.
After the fall of the Berlin wall, Stralsund and Kiel remained
partners. On 24 October 1992, they signed an agreement relating to the partnership
which took account of the changed circumstances.
