Kiel - Tallinn:
the
twin-city partnership
The
cities of Tallinn und Kiel have been linked in a special friendship since 1972.
A common involvement in the Olympic Games brought the two cities together. In
1972, Kiel organised the Olympic sailing competitions, and in 1980, the Estonian
capital was host to the Olympic sailing events and asked the Land Capital for
advice.
In addition to collaboration on sailing sport events, from the very first years
of the cities’ relationship, many other encounters took place. On 13 May 1986
the two cities signed an official city twinning agreement.
In 1992, Estonia became an independent democratic republic. The very same year,
Tallinn and Kiel updated their twinning agreement, which was signed in its new
form on 25 January 1992.
The relationship between the twin cities has continued developing up to the
present day. As a consequence of the positive contacts between Tallinn and Kiel,
the Land Schleswig-Holstein maintains contractual relations with the Republic
of Estonia.
