Some
facts about the city of Gdynia
The
young city of Gdynia (formerly Gdingen) is situated in northern Poland by the
Baltic Sea, some 20km north of Gdansk. The dynamic seaport has, since 1920,
grown from a small fishing village to an industrial seaport district with 250,000
inhabitants. Gdynia is well-known as a commercial and dockyard city.
During the Second World War, Gdynia served the German troops as a naval base
under the name of Gotenhafen. When the wave of refugees flooded out of East
Prussia at the end of the war, Gdynia was one of the most important evacuation
ports from which ships sailed to the west.
