Some facts
about the city of Sovetsk
Sovetsk
lies on the border with Lithuania south of the Memel river. The city today has
around 40,000 inhabitants and is a seaport as well as a railway junction.
The most important branches of industry in Sovetsk are wood-processing, engineering,
and cotton textiles.
The city is part of the Kaliningrad District (Oblast) with around one million
inhabitants. The capital of this district is Kiel’s twin city of Kaliningrad.
In territorial terms, the area is completely separated from the Russian motherland.
During the Second World War, the former German city of Tilsit was severely devastated
by air raids and rebuilt under Russian direction.
