Kiel - The Seaport with a City Centre
Impressive passenger ferries from Norway and Sweden tie up in the heart of the city every day. The most attractive are the Color Fantasy and the Color Magic.

They transform ferry trips into cruises. The "Seaport with a City Centre" is the embarkation point for a large number of cruise liners, and the locks of the Kiel Canal are the gateway to the most heavily navigated artificial waterway in the world. Ferry and cargo lines serving numerous cities bordering the Baltic Sea secure Kiel's increasing regional significance as a port.

The city has been closely connected with the Navy since it established its first port in Kiel in 1865. Kiel is the largest base of the German Bundeswehr in Schleswig-Holstein which makes the armed forces a major employer in the city. Visits by international fleets, not only for Kieler Woche, emphasise the city’s significance as a NATO alliance port. Kiel is the home port of the famous "Gorch Fock", the sailing training ship of the German Navy.
