The new design for the Bootshafen (boat harbour) has created a lively, appealing place linking the city centre with the main harbour. There are terrace-like steps on the sunny side, inviting people to linger in the summer months, and offering an outstanding events venue. A pontoon has also been installed on the water. The eastern area was constructed as a gentle slope. The street called “Wall” was reconfigured during the building operation, with a surface design appropriate to the old town.

A distinctive lighting design has been adopted to make this open space more attractive in the evening. The terrace steps, companionways, ramps, balustrade and the space under the pedestrian bridge have been highlighted. The light masts with their light sails are another special feature, along with the trees lit from below, and the pontoon, whose underwater lighting makes it look as though it is hovering. Comprehensive use of LED technology made it possible to keep running and maintenance costs down. Flexible electronic controls mean that the individual lighting effects can be adapted to meet particular requirements. The Bootshafen was opened in 2004, after a two-year building period.
