The Olympic sailing events lasted from 28 August to 6 September 1972. 320 yachtsmen from 42 nations in 153 boats started, in 6 classes of boat (Soling, Dragon, Tempest, Star, Flying Dutchman and Finn). 250 journalists from 20 nations covered the events.

On 3 September 1972, almost half a million people lined the shores of the Kiel Firth to watch the first Kiel wind jammer parade, featuring boats from 17 nations. “I have never seen anything so beautiful”, remarked German President Gustav Heinemann. Two days later the Munich terrorist attack cast its shadow over the sailing in Kiel as well. But the Games went on. The 1972 Olympics considerably improved Kiel’s infrastructure, and made a lasting mark on the city.
